Fanfold turns RSS and Atom feeds into magazines in the spirit of a DIY zine. Every source hangs on a wall as its own issue, with a masthead, a lead photo and a cover. Open one and it reads like paper: articles set in a calm serif with drop caps, photos as halftone prints, and the page curls as you turn it, sometimes with a misprint. The app is built for foldables. Unfolded, the iPhone Duo and Android foldables show a double page with the fold as the spine. Folded shut, the outer screen shows the cover of the current issue. On every other phone, you read single pages. The idea behind it: read, don't scroll. Every issue has a last page, and there is no algorithm and no push notifications. Fanfold keeps every article and prints numbered issues with the next unread ones, oldest first. If a feed only gives a teaser, Fanfold fetches the whole article from the page, as long as the page shows it freely. A newsstand with 59 hand-picked sources makes it easy to start, Fanfold finds the feeds of any other site from its address, and subscriptions from other readers come in as an OPML file.
